The Belgariad is a 5 part fantasy epic by David Eddings. The story concerns the recovery of the Ord of Aldur from the evil god Torak, and the coming of age of Garion, an orphan. Garion is accompanied by aunt Polgara and grandfather Belgarath as they try to fulfill an ancient prophecy that will decide the fate of the universe.
The title of each novel combines a chess term with a fantasy term with the concept of a game of destiny being a significant motif in the story arc.
The Malloreon is a five book sequel that continues the story after the events of the belgariad. There have also been two prequels, Belgarath the Sorceror and Polgara the Sorceress which give a very nice backstory to the events in both the Belgariad and the Malloreon.
