Ship of Magic is the first volume in the Liveship Traders series and is set in the same world as the previous Robin Hobb series Farseer Trilogy and features liveships, ocean going vessels that have been made from Wizardwood, a very valuable magical wood.
Ship of Magic follows the Vestrit trading family aboard the Liveship Vivacia. What makes these liveships even more unique is that once three generations of family has passed away, the Liveship gains sentience (quickens), gaining the memories of those ancestors who have previously died aboard.
As the ships are so valuable, the can take generations to pay for and are built by the Rain Wilders, it is the families responsibility for keeping contracts with the Rain Wild families in either blood or Gold.
The Vestrit family have had Vivacia in their family for two generations, and must travel to the River Wilders to trade. Before they begin however, Ephron Vestrit dies and Vivacia quickens, his daughter Althea is shockened to see the ship pass to her sister and runs away...
Robin Hobb mixes together a unique and intelligent idea with great characters and an intriguing plot line into a very enjoyable, must read book.
